# What is a liquidity bridge?

**Short definition:** A liquidity bridge is the software that connects a broker's retail trading platform to its liquidity providers. It brings external prices into the platform, sends client orders, or the broker's hedges, out to the providers, and applies the broker's rules for markups, routing and risk on the way. Without it, a retail platform can only quote and fill trades internally.

## How it works

A retail trading platform is built to manage client accounts, charts and orders. Liquidity providers speak institutional protocols, usually FIX. The bridge sits between the two and does four jobs:

1. **Price in.** It receives quotes from one or more liquidity providers and passes them to the platform, often after applying the broker's markup.
2. **Orders out.** When a client trade, or a hedge of client exposure, needs to reach the market, the bridge sends it to a provider and returns the fill to the platform.
3. **Routing rules.** It decides which trades go to which provider and which stay with the broker, by account group, instrument, size or client profile. This is where an A-book, B-book or hybrid model is actually implemented.
4. **Risk and records.** It tracks exposure, rejections and slippage, and keeps the execution records compliance and reporting teams need.

Many bridges also aggregate several providers into one price (see liquidity aggregator), and some include risk-management dashboards.

## Example

A new broker runs a retail platform and signs with one [prime of prime](https://roteiro.consulting/forex/compare/prime-of-prime-vs-prime-broker-vs-aggregator). The bridge connects the two over a FIX session. Clients see the prime of prime's prices plus the broker's markup. The broker's rules send trades above a set size, and all trades from accounts flagged as professional, straight to the provider, and keep small retail trades on its own book. When the broker adds a second provider, the bridge's aggregation picks the better price for each order.

## Liquidity bridge vs liquidity aggregator

People use the terms together because the products overlap. The **bridge** is the connection between the platform and the outside market, plus the routing rules. The **aggregator** is the function that merges several price feeds into one book. A broker with a single provider needs a bridge but not aggregation; a broker with three providers needs both, often from the same software.

## Liquidity bridge vs FIX API

FIX is the messaging standard most liquidity providers use for prices and orders ([FIX Trading Community](https://www.fixtrading.org/what-is-fix/)). A FIX API is a connection point. A bridge is the software that uses FIX connections on one side and the platform's own interface on the other, and adds the broker's logic in between.

## Why it matters if you sell to brokers

The bridge is where your product meets the broker's stack. If you are a liquidity provider, the first technical question is which bridges you are certified with. If you sell risk, reporting or analytics tools, the bridge is often where your data comes from. Brokers read integration pages to find out whether your connection is native, via a bridge, or a custom FIX build. Say which, on a page they can find.

## FAQ

**Does every forex broker need a liquidity bridge?**
Any broker that sends trades or hedges from a retail platform to external liquidity needs one, either a standalone bridge or a connector built into its platform or provider setup. A broker that keeps all client trades on its own book can run without one, but most use one to hedge at least part of their exposure.

**Is a bridge the same as an A-book setup?**
No. A bridge is the tool; A-book, B-book and hybrid are the policies it applies. The same bridge can send every trade to market, keep every trade in house, or split flow by rules the broker sets..

**Who supplies liquidity bridges?**
Specialist broker-technology vendors, liquidity providers that bundle connectivity, and platform vendors with built-in connectors. Ask any supplier which platforms and providers it is certified with, where it is hosted, and who supports it during the weekly market open.
